The People Behind the Care

Hundreds of tireless licensed nurses, nurse aides, therapists, housekeeping and maintenance workers work tirelessly to give the best possible care to our residents. In particular, nurse aides are the backbone of the skilled care profession, providing care every day to nursing home residents.

NCHCFA established the Fabulous 50 awards program to recognize nurse aides across North Carolina for excellence in care. Our judges select 10 nominees from five districts. One nominee per district is honored with our Nurse Aide of the Year award.

We're proud to spotlight the top nurse aides from the Fabulous 50. They represent a host of skilled caregivers who make North Carolina nursing homes a wonderful place to live.

1. Sherry Thomas

2010 District I Nurse Aide of the Year
Transportation and Rehabilitative Aide
Mountain View Manor Nursing Center in Bryson City, NC
Working in long-term care: 38 years

Sherry has worked in long term care for over 38 years!  She has been with Mountain View Manor Nursing Center for the past 18 years.  Sherry has worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant for 10 years at the facility and is currently the Transportation/Rehabilitation Aide.  Sherry is truly one of a kind.   She has always gone above and beyond for the residents in her care.  For example, Sherry has always kept track of the residents' special occasions.  She will purchase a rose for a husband to give to his wife on their anniversary, or a box of candy for a wife to give to her husband on his birthday.    On one occasion, Sherry noticed a resident crying.  She knelt by her bed and asked what was wrong?  The resident told her "It is Christmas.  I have no money, I am unable to get to town, and I wanted to buy presents for my great-grandchildren."  Sherry took her hand and asked what ages they were.  She went to town and bought presents for her to give them out of her own money!  Sherry wanted nothing in return but to make that resident happy.  She truly loves her residents and their families!
