Questions to Ask about Nursing Homes
When considering nursing homes, it's helpful to compare them on the same criteria. Print out this checklist and take along to fill out during each nursing home visit.
Facility
- Is the facility clean and are furnishings well-kept?
- Is the temperature comfortable? What are the noise levels?
- Is the lighting appropriate to the living area? What is the smoking policy?
- Are residents and staff well-groomed?
Staffing
- How many RNs and LPNs are on duty on each shift?
- Are direct care staff involved in planning care?
- Are direct care staff involved in making facility policy?
- Is there a full-time social worker?
- Do staff wear easy-to-read name tags?
Activities
- Is there an activity program?
- Are there intergenerational activities?
- Pet program? Facility pets?
- Do they offer recreational outings?
- Is there a volunteer program?
- What type of transportation does the facility provide? Example: to doctor visits?
- How is communication with family and friends facilitated?
- Residents have access to TV? The Internet? Email?
How do patients enjoy the outdoors?
Safety
- How do the smoke detection and sprinkler systems function?
- Are exits clearly marked and accessible?
- What measures are in place to protect residents who may wander out of the building?
- Does the facility have disaster and emergency plans?
- What is the policy on using restraints?
Other issues
- How are residents' right to choice protected?
- Do families and loved ones participate in care, care planning and nursing home life?
- How does the staff assess the ongoing physical, emotional and spiritual needs of each resident?
- How does the facility support enjoyment, humor, relationships with others?
- How does the staff help residents feel a sense of usefulness and purpose?
